Simple Oxygen Mask
Simple oxygen Mask is Medical devise used to deliver oxygen to patients who need oxygen.
What is Simple Oxygen Mask ?
This oxygen Mask is made of plastic. Mask covers the Nose and mouth to deliver the oxygen and it is connected to an oxygen source through tubing. It is a disposable item.
How much oxygen Can deliver through the Simple Oxygen ?
- 6-10 liters per minute (L/min),
- Flow rate should not be less than 5 L/min to prevent carbon dioxide rebreathin.
O2 Concentration ( Fio2 ) :
- Delivers about 25% - 60% oxygen concentration
- The Atomspheric air contain 21% oxygen. Through oxygen flowmeter we can deliver the 4% of oxygen for each 1 liter.
(Example : Atomspheric air + liters O2 )
21% + 4%(1liter of O2) = 25%
1=25%, 2=29%, 3=33%, 4=37%, 5=41%, 6=45%)
When Simple oxygen Mask to be used ?
- If oxygen saturation level decrease less than 90
- Shortness of breath
- Mild to Moderate hypoxia
- Emergency Conditions
- Respiratory infections
- Post-operative patients
Parts of Simple Oxygen Mask ?
- Plastic face mask ( covers nose and mouth )
- Elastic head strap
- oxygen inlet port
- oxygne tubing
- Side exhalation holes for co2 escape
What are the Nursing Responsibilities during Simple oxygen Mask ?
- Always confirm with physician orders for oxygen flow rates
- Confirm the flow is minimum 5 L/min
- Continuous check the oxygen saturation levels
- Monitor the skin irritation around Nose and ears
- Check properly mask fit with out lekage

What is Administration Guidelines ?
- A minimum of 6 LPM is required for all masks to flush expired carbondioxide and prevent rebreathing of CO2
- Do not use humid fier and fir firmly.
- Use for severe asthma. Pneumonia, trauma, or severe sepsis.
Advantages :
- Delivers oxygen concentrations upto 60%
- Deliver Most oxygen than nasal cannula
- Mostly used Emergency Department
- Convienient to use.
Disadvantages :
- Thight seal is required for higher oxygen concentrations hot and confi impractical long term.
- Unable to eat when using simple oxygen mask
- it make discomfort for long term use
Difference or Comparison Between Simple oxygen mask and other Mask
- Nasal Cannula : It delivery 1-6 liter per minute and it is more comfortable.
- Non-Rebreather Mask : High level of oxygen can deliver 90-100%.
- Venturi Mask : Precise oxygen concentraion control
