Importance Of Microbiology In Nursing

IMPORTANCE OF MICROBIOLOGY Relevant to Nursing

Why is Microbiology important in Nursing : 

Microbiology deals with the study of micro organisms and their activities. Medical Microbiology is study of microbes that infect humans the disease they causes, their diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

The study of microbiology helps to nurse in understanding the principles of hospital and community hygiene maintenance and prevention. It contributing to reduction of mortality and morbidity and duration of hospital stay for inpatients

     

The few examples the importance of microbiology in nursing care.

  1. Intensive Care Nurseries.
  2. Obstetric Units
  3. Communicable disease wards
  4. Operation Theaters
  5. Burn Units
  6. CSSU

1. Intensive Care Nurseries :-

  • These are staffed by doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff with special education or experience

         They take care of incubators and maintain sterile atmospheric in unit.

2. Obstetric Units :-

  • Pureperal and postabortal infections are responsible for a significant number of death due to maternal mortality.
  • It is a wound infection of the birth canal after abortion or childbirth. Which sometimes extends to cause phlebitis and or peritonitis.
  • The nurse can play an important role in helping to prevent such infections, maternal hygiene programme should emphasise the role of nurse in antenatal care labour and puerperium.

3. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE WARDS : ( INFECTIOUS DISEASE WARDS)

These are wards identifiable by disease.
Ex : Tetanus ward, Gastro enteritis ward, Rabies Ward.

          Patients with the same disease are admitted and are taken care. The nurse carrying for these patients use aseptic technique and use proper measures to prevent transmission of the infection to other patients.

4. Operation Theaters :

  • The Nurse in the operation theater takes meticulous care in keeping the atmosphere sterile by frequent fumigation procedures at regular interavals.

  • Checking for sterility by culturing swabs collected from various site in the OT.

  • She will also make suitable aseptic arrangements to see the surgical procedures are carried out under sterile conditions.

5. Burns Units :

  • A burn is a sterile wound initially within a few hours the wound gets colonsed by bacteria.

  • The nurse can take aseptic technique precautions to prevent hospital in such substances

6. C S S U :

Conclusion : 

Microbiology deals with the micro organisoms, studying microbiology helps for nuse about prevention of diseases.
