Ureter Anatomy


Anatomy Of Ureter

  • These are a pair of tubes through which the urine formed in the kidney is conveyed through the urinary bladder.
  • The upper part of ureter is dilated called as renal pelvis.
  • It comes out of the hilum of the kidney, narrow and forms the ureter.
  • The ureters pas downwards on both sides of the vertebral column.
  • The end of the pelvic cavity and open into the supero-lateral angles of urinary bladder.
  • The cores of ureter is divided into 2 parts : Abdominal and Pelvic part.
  • The pelvic part is again divided into 3 parts :
  • The ureter shows 3 normal constrictions. - At the pelvic – ureteric Junction.
    - While it is entering the pelvic cavity.
    - While it is passing through the wall of urinary bladder.
  • Arterial supply : Ureteric artery.

Applied Anatomy :

     The renal stones if they are large can get blocked the ureter at any of its 3 normal constrictions. It will cause severe pain called as renal colic. The patient will not be able to pass urine.

Parts of a Nephron :


  •  Bowman’s capsule which contains glomerulus
  • Proximal convoluted tubule.
  • Loop of Henle.
  • Distal convoluted tubule.
  • Collecting ducts.
  • The collecting ducts will pass through the medulla and open into the minor calyxes.
  • Arterial Supply : Renal Artery.
  • Venous Drainage : Renal Vein.
  • Lymphatic Drainage : Para aortic group of lymph nodes.
  • Nerve Supply : Sympathetic and Para sympathetic.
