Nasal Cannula

Nasal Cannula

          It is simple comfortable device with two cannula about  1.5 cm long protrude the centre of a disposable tube and are inserted into the nose and oxygen is delivered via the cannula with the flow rate of upto 6L/min. Higher flow rates dry air mucosa and to mark further increases inspired oxygen ( O2 ).

Liter Flow : 1-6 liters.

O2 Concentration ( Fio2 ) : 21% - 45%

          The Atomspheric air contain 21% oxygen. Through oxygen flowmeter we can deliver the 4% of oxygen for each 1 liter.
(Ex : Atomspheric air + liters O2 )
         21% + 4%(1liter of O2) = 25%
1=25%, 2=29%, 3=33%, 4=37%, 5=41%, 6=45%)

Administration Guidelines :

  • Maximum flow is 5-6 LPM. Changes to another O2 device if patinet requires >5 LPM.
  • Humidify for liter flows >4 LPM.
  • Use on patient's with adequate tidal volume and normal vital signs.

Advantages :

  • Effective for low oxygen concentrations.

Disadvantages :

  • Will not deliver oxygen concentrations higher than 40%.
  • Dry mucous membranes.
